Are there size limits for sheds that don’t require a permit in different states?

I’m trying to figure out whether my shed idea is small enough to avoid permits. Some people tell me that if it’s under a certain size, it doesn’t require approval, but others warn the rules vary a lot depending on the state. I don’t want to waste time applying if I don’t need to, but I also don’t want to accidentally break the rules. Does anyone know how the limits differ between states, or if there’s a general guideline across Australia?

You’re right that the rules aren’t the same everywhere. Each state sets its own regulations, and sometimes even councils within the same state differ. Some allow small sheds without approval, but size, height, and location on your property all matter. I came across https://shedpermit.au/, and it breaks down requirements by state in clear terms. Having that information helped me avoid confusion and know exactly where my project stood before I started.
